Consequentialism

New page

= Definition =

Consequentialism is a theory of ethics, that holds that morally right actions are those that produce a good outcome.

== Why it is false ==

The main problem of consequentialism is that it is actually empty itself and must always smuggle another ethical theory to valuate, what is actually the good outcome that should be desired.

Example:

In 1950, a woman is giving birth, and medical technology has progressed so far that doctors can diagnose a heart condition in the fetus. After birth, it is very likely that the baby can suffer heart failure.

Consequentialism is silent on how to evaluate the best future outcome.

* If we choose eugenics as the ethical theory to follow, then this diagnostical capability brings progress in culling the weak babies from mankind
* If we choose Christian ethics, where all human beings are created in the image of God, and therefore have a right to life, doctors can have necessary equipment at the ready when the woman goes into labor

And of course, one can try any other ethical theory to decide what should be done, but, consequentialism does not include it within itself. People always smuggle some ethical theory into discussion within consequentialism.
